The Christchurch startup making robots
Techmatics is a Christchurch-based startup founded in 2016, building inspection robotics and supporting systems in-house in New Zealand. Our team designs and manufactures rugged inspection robots for confined and hard-to-access environments, backed by local servicing, training, and long-term support. With a focus on practical field reliability, we work with commercial operators and government agencies, delivering tools that improve safety, reduce downtime, and produce clearer inspection outcomes.

Australian Government - DAFF
Techmatics Robotics designed and manufactured custom inspection robots for container and under‑vehicle inspections to support Australian biosecurity operations. The robots enable inspectors to examine the underside of vehicles for biosecurity threats such as insects and reptiles that could pose significant risks to Australian agriculture. -
The Department of Corrections - NZ
Corrections New Zealand engaged Techmatics Robotics to develop inspection robots for vehicles entering prison facilities. The robots are used to inspect under vehicle chassis for contraband such as drugs and weapons. The systems are currently deployed at gantry areas across multiple prison facilities and provide a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional handheld inspection mirrors. -
Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) - NZ
Biosecurity New Zealand required an effective solution for inspecting under vehicle carriages for threats such as snakes, spiders, and foreign insects that could endanger New Zealand’s biodiversity and agricultural ecosystem. Techmatics Robotics supplied under‑vehicle inspection robots now deployed at the Port of Auckland. These robots inspect incoming vehicles, containers, and agricultural machinery, helping to prevent harmful organisms from entering the country undetected. -
JEVIC
Techmatics Robotics was contracted by the JEVIC Group to design and build an under‑vehicle inspection robot for vehicles intended for export. The robot is used to inspect vehicle undercarriages for rust and corrosion prior to auction and overseas shipment from Yokohama Port. This automated inspection process significantly reduced inspection time, delivering substantial efficiency gains for JEVIC, which processes thousands of vehicles. -
Australian Federal Police (AFP)
Techmatics Robotics was invited to demonstrate its robotic solutions to the AFP. Following extensive trials, Techmatics was selected to supply the Cerberus‑X platform. The upgraded Cerberus‑X robot includes full voice communication capabilities and can also function as a covert listening and surveillance platform when required. -
Vertech
Vertech Inspections commissioned Techmatics Robotics to design and build a custom robotic inspection solution. The delivered system features a removable pan‑tilt camera with optical zoom, mounted on the top of the robot, along with an additional front‑mounted camera. The robot supports both wireless and tethered operation, providing Vertech Inspections with flexible options for inspecting pipelines, crawlspaces, and confined environments. -
Australian Army
The Australian Army engaged Techmatics Robotics to supply a crawlspace inspection robot for defense applications. The Hades platform was selected to meet operational requirements. Techmatics continues to work closely with stakeholders to maintain and enhance the system to suit evolving inspection needs. -
Contact Energy - NZ
Contact Energy required a robotic solution for penstock inspections across its hydroelectric assets. Techmatics’ Hades‑4 robot was selected for this application. The robot is now used for penstock inspections throughout New Zealand, improving safety and inspection efficiency in confined and hazardous environments. -
Western Australia Police
Western Australia Police evaluated multiple international tactical robot platforms for use by their Armed Offender Team. Techmatics’ Cerberus robot was selected following comprehensive trials, including performance testing through a purpose‑built obstacle course. -
Queensland Police Service
The Queensland Police Service engaged Techmatics Robotics to supply the Cerberus‑X tactical inspection robot for use by its Armed Offender Squad. The platform is used for negotiation support and tactical surveillance operations. -
Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) - UK
Techmatics Robotics was engaged by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to supply under‑vehicle inspection robots for examining bus and vehicle carriages. The robots are used to identify security threats such as explosives or weapons on vehicles entering secure zones. The solution was deployed at the Glastonbury Music Festival and has since been used regularly across various locations in the United Kingdom, as required by DVSA operations. -
New Zealand Police - Armed Offenders Squad
Techmatics Robotics designed and built customised surveillance robots and pole camera systems for the New Zealand Police. These systems are used in hostage negotiation scenarios and for inspecting high‑risk or hazardous environments. The robots are equipped with HD and thermal cameras, IR and white lighting, making them versatile platforms for surveillance and reconnaissance operations. -
Aviation Security Service (AvSec) - NZ
Techmatics Robotics was selected through a national tender process to supply under‑vehicle inspection robots and pole cameras for AvSec New Zealand. Following comprehensive user trials conducted over nearly one year, Techmatics’ solutions were chosen for deployment at all major airport vehicle entry gates. The robots automatically scan vehicle undercarriages and generate complete inspection images, enabling security personnel to identify hidden or foreign objects entering or exiting airport environments. -
Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ)
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand engaged Techmatics Robotics to supply under‑vehicle inspection robots and pole cameras for vehicles entering secure facilities. The automated inspection process improves operational efficiency while enhancing safety for security staff during vehicle inspections.
