Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) - NZ
Biosecurity New Zealand required an effective solution for inspecting under vehicle carriages for threats such as snakes, spiders, and foreign insects that could endanger New Zealand’s biodiversity and agricultural ecosystem. Techmatics Robotics supplied under‑vehicle inspection robots now deployed at the Port of Auckland. These robots inspect incoming vehicles, containers, and agricultural machinery, helping to prevent harmful organisms from entering the country undetected.
Under-Vehicle Inspection Robot
In 2020 Techmatics NZ were given the task to design and build a custom Inspection robot for the Bio-Security of New Zealand Ports. The Robot had to meet strict MPI requirements and had to go through multiple test and requirement specifications.
The New robot was built to inspect hard to reach crawl spaces covering health and safety and of the inspector. The robot has been designed collect and analyze data , gaining real-time context of the inspection area.
The custom built low light camera system allows the user to clearly see hidden dangers and covers the bio- security of New Zealand.
MPI’s robot, to be used at Ports of Auckland, could detect biosecurity risks like insects on the underside of imported vehicles using the thermal imagery camera, a Biosecurity New Zealand spokesperson said.
It also removed the need to use a ramp to inspect vehicles, which had health and safety benefits and reduced the chance of vehicle damage, the spokesperson said.
